The Fundy Region Recyclable Boat Challenge

Celebration of Green Space, 12 noon July 10th 2010

The first recyclable boat challenge was a huge success and saw participants race a boat, made from recyclable material, across Lily Lake. Look for the race again next year!  Photos below.

Boats were judged on the following:

  1. Time lapsed to travel across the lake.
  2. Originality / creativity of the boat
  3. Recyclability

All material must meet the criteria of acceptable recyclable or compostable material including size constraints (i.e. they must fit into the blue bins or compost cart). For a complete list visit www.FundyRecycles.com Refundable beverage containers are accepted as well. Points will be deducted for any material that is not recyclable or compostable.

  4. All crew members must be 18 years of age or older, wear a personal floatation device and foot protection.
  5. The watercraft must be propelled by human or sail power only. Crew must propel their boat from inside or on top of the craft.

Some photos of the fabulous entries and the presentation of the trophies to the winners.

Biodegradable Plastic Bags from Retail Stores:

Please check the bags you bring home from local retailers, before recycling them at the Blue Bins.

Degradable, Biodegradable and Oxo-biodegradable Plastic Bags are NOT recyclable at the Blue Bins.
Also, as these bags contain plastic, they cannot be composted in the green cart (for examples of compost bags click here)
Some retail stores have replaced their regular plastic bags with biodegradable plastic bags.  These bags look just like regular plastic grocery bags, however they have an additive to help them breakdown.  This additive can be harmful to the end recycled product.

 How to Use this Calendar

Notice of Change: The Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission is enhancing public communication by replacing the question period at quarterly Open Meetings with the opportunity for members of the public to make a presentation at regular monthly Commission meetings.

Interested persons are asked to submit a written request of no more than 300 words to the Commission two weeks prior to the set meeting date. All presentations must be 10 minutes or less, have one spokesperson, and be an issue not previously entertained at a prior meeting. The Executive Committee holds discretion to approve when and if the presentation will be made to the Commission. Commission meetings typically fall on the second Thursday of every month. Each month the Commission confirms that date of the next meeting, and the confirmed meeting date are posted here on the blue menu under Commission / Meetings & Minutes.

As always, if you have questions for the Commission, please contact the Hotline weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at
738-1212 or by email at hotline@fundyrecycles.com.

The Blue Run is a private company, which offers a weekly pickup service for recyclables in Millidgeville. To see if they may expand to your community, visit their website at: www.thebluerun.com
