Batteries

Rechargeable: Through the national program, Call2Recycle™, the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) can help you recycle your used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones. Rechargeable batteries are found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and remote control toys. Some of the companies that are involved in recycling rechargeable batteries in the Fundy Region through the Call to Recycle Program along with others such as a company called Greentec, are: The Source, Canadian Tire, Home Depot and Future Shop. All Batteries: Take to the HHW Facility at Crane Mountain Landfill on Saturday mornings from 8 am to 12 noon at no charge.

Beverage Containers

Redemption Centres are privately owned businesses that have been registered with the Department of the Environment, and authorized to collect beverage containers and pay refunds to the public under New Brunswick’s Beverage Container Program. For a Redemption Centre nearest you, look in the yellow pages under Recycling Services or pick up in Wells area by KV Old Boys. Redemption Centres are not part of the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission’s recycling program.

Included in the Program are:

• Soft drinks
• Beer, wine, and spirits
• Flavoured waters
• Mineral waters
• Fruit juices
• Vegetable juices
• Low alcohol drinks
• Milk and milk products are not included in the deposit/refund Program at this time
   

The containers covered by the Program include all sizes (five litres and under) of:

• Glass and plastic bottles
• Metal cans
• Drinking boxes
• Plastic cups with foil lids
• Plastic pouches (like ’ mini-sips ’ )
• Cartons

Building Materials

Habitat for Humanity is accepting donations of used and surplus building materials: doors, windows, cabinets, lumber, lighting fixtures, and more. Habitat’s ReStore, located at 388 Rothesay Avenue, will sell these materials at low prices. The money is used to build homes for low income working families. Cell Phones

Have you decided to update your existing cell phone and would like to recycle your old one?  Check with the company where you are purchasing your new phone to see if they will recycle your existing phone.  If not, please see the list below of some of the companies in the Fundy Region which are accepting cell phones for recycling. Some of the companies that are involved in recycling Cell Phones in the Fundy Region, are: Cox Electronics, Wacky Wheatley’s, Hughes Communications, and the Future Shop.  Verified January 2009

Computers

New! Year-Round Computer Recycling Beginning April 1st, 2010, you can recycle your old computer system* on Saturdays from 8am to 12 noon.  Old computers will now be accepted at our Household Hazardous Waste facility at Crane Mountain Landfill.  Or, in September watch for a Round Up event of both computers and hazardous waste in your community.

What happens to your computer?

The computers will be shipped to Resnet, a non-profit organization in Edmundston NB. The systems are disassembled to salvage working components and recyclable materials.  Some systems are refurbished and donated to low-income families and non-profit groups.

Grass

You don’t have to rake and bag your grass clippings. Grass clippings enrich your lawn. Simply leave the grass cuttings on the lawn. Mulch it with your lawnmower, if you can. The cuttings will quickly decompose on site, thanks to the soil’s natural micro-organisms. The cuttings will serve as natural fertilizer and a significant source of moisture for your lawn.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Drop off your used compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) at Home Depot for Recycling. 55 Depot Court, 632-9440 Compact fluorescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes are accepted at our Household Hazardous Waste Facility open every Saturday 8am - 12 noon.

Oil

Under the provincial Used Oil Program, businesses that sell oil are required to either accept used oil, or must arrange with another nearby facility to take back used oil. There is no charge for this program. Products Covered: Engine oil Hydraulic fluid   Lubricating oil (engines, turbines, gears) Transmission fluid Information about the Used Oil Program is also available on the Department of the Environment’s website, by emailing uop/pghu@gnb.ca, or by calling 506 453-7945. Oil is accepted at our Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Tires

Tire Stewardship Program You may return your old tires to the tire dealer where you purchase your new tires. Certain restrictions apply. Ask your retailer for details or visit the New Brunswick Tire Stewardship Board at www.nbtire.com. Crane Mountain Landfill accepts tires for recycling as follows: Tires residential cars / trucks $5 each Tires for large commercial vehicles $10 each
